Plot teaser:

In France, the CEO of a chemical company looks to cheaply dispose of their plant’s chemical waste. He and his secretary come up with the idea to dump it illegally. When the secretary contaminates a milk tanker, it causes several deaths in the town.

Revenge-of-the-Living-Dead-Girls-funeral

The toxic waste, dumped in a nearby graveyard, then causes the recently dead townspeople to rise as ravenous zombies, who seek revenge on the unscrupulous company and its employees…

Reviews:

“In the end, the utter nonsense of the whole affair undermines Reinhard’s “Give a hoot, don’t pollute” message and the general sleaziness undermines the female empowerment angle of lady zombies (and Bridget) beating up the boys. What you have is some nakedness, some blood and some terrible dubbing.” Dave Bow, Portland Mercuryla_revanche_des_mortes_vivantes_photo

“What follows is a impossible-to-follow-even-if-we-cared plot involving chemical dumping, corporate blackmail, and enough fornication to make a soap opera roll its eyes; everyone seems to be involved with everyone else’s partners. As toxic chemicals seep into the graves of the dead girls, they rise and exact their revenge on those who are responsible – just as the title advertises! See zombie girls rise from the grave looking like cheap knockoffs from Thriller. Kill girls kill! Mix in some unsexy nudity. Rinse. Kill again.” Peter Schorn, IGN

Screen Shot 2015-08-05 at 23.38.49

” … for fans of bad trash cinema, this one is worth a look. Despite some slow spots it offers enough ineptitude, gore and completely unnecessary nudity to satisfy the wants of most exploitation fans and the unintentional hilarity scattered throughout give it a fair amount of entertainment value if you have a tolerance for bad movies.” Ian Jane, DVD Talk

“The best bit is probably when the three women zombies lamely sexual assault and play grab ass with a female victim, who sort of starts masturbating with a severed hand. She loses interest in the sex about the time a zombie chick sticks a sword into her vagina. No, I’m not kidding. Yes, on paper it sounds like it would be an awesome, brutal, gross scene. In execution, its kind of like bad softcore porn, but it is a scene worth watching, horror fans.” Robert Fure, Film School Rejects

Screen Shot 2015-08-05 at 23.39.10

” … numerous dull boardroom scenes and typically gratuitous nude scenes featuring the majority of the female cast. Almost everything about this production is inept, thanks to director Pierre B. Reinhard (who, unsurprisingly, also has several soft-core porno titles to his credit). Gives milk a bad name.” Glenn Kay, Zombie Movies: The Ultimate Guide

‘He needed her body and her blood to live!’

Love Brides of the Blood Mummy – original title: El secreto de la momia egipcia – is a 1973 Spanish/French horror film directed by Alejandro Martí from a screenplay by Vincent Didier and Julio Salvador (Hannah, Queen of the Vampires). In the UK, it was released as Lips of Blood (not to be confused with Jean Rollin’s film of the same name).

Cast:

George Rigaud, Michael Flynn, Catherine Franck, Frank Braña, Patricia Lee, Sandra Reeves, Julie Presscott, Jacques Bernard, Martin Trévières, Teresa Gimpera.

Love-Brides-of-the-Blood-Mummy

Plot:

James Barton (Frank Braña), an Egyptologist, travels to Dartmoor Castle because there is a rumour that the Count (Jorge George Rigaud) has a collection of mummies. There are also rumours that a number of young women have gone missing in the area. When he comes across the Count he is shocked to find him whipping a mummified hand he has nailed to the wall…

Reviews:

” … this Spanish/ French adventure is not without its own quirky charms. There is some fondling and the occasional flash of flesh. There are a lot of scenes involving the butler chasing women around. The mummy stares at people a lot. And there is some odd use made of irising in and out of scenes.” Dan Budnik, Bleeding Skull!

lovebrides25

“Aside from any nudity found in the uncut version, the only other thing this has going for it is the shooting locations. It was filmed during the Autumn and the outdoor scenery is lovely. There are lots of colorful trees, fields of tall wheat blowing in the wind and some nice shots along the ocean. The director, who seems obsessed with both shooting reflections of people in water and horse riding, has a nice eye for landscapes. Too bad the rest of this sucks.” The Bloody Pit of Horror

love brides of the blood mummy_feed 2

“Unfortunately this is one of the dullest pieces of Euro-Horror I have sat through in recent memory. Most of the film is a boring series of repetitive scenes of a kind of hypnotized servant going out to drag female victims back to the castle dungeon for the ‘mummy’ to molest and drain of blood.” Rod Barnett, Pit of Rod

lovebrides28

“Unfortunately it is pretty darn boring as well, the pacing is plodding and we don’t really get any characterisation to draw us in.” Taliesen Meets the Vampires

“For an exploitation picture, it feels eerily serious with its strong and creative score, moody with piano and percussion. Pacing is slow, yet something is always happening on screen. I loved the chase through the tall grass … it’s a good weird atmospheric exploitation picture that fans should seek out…” David Elroy Goldweber, Claws & Saucers

She Killed in Ecstasy is a 1970 West German-Spanish erotic horror thriller film directed by Jesús Franco. The production staff included many cast members and nearly the same crew as his previous film Vampyros Lesbos. The German title is Sie tötete in Ekstase.

Cast:

Soledad Miranda, Fred Williams, Ewa Strömberg, Paul Muller, Howard Vernon, Horst Tappert, Jess Franco.

She Killed in Ecstasy is currently available as a definitive uncut Severin Films Blu-ray in the US and UK. Extras include interviews with Jess Franco, Soledad Miranda historian Amy Brown, Stephen Thrower (author of Murderous Passion: The Delirious Cinema of Jess Franco); actor Paul Muller and the German trailer.

She-Killed-in-Ecstasy-Severin-Films-Blu-ray

Plot:

Dr. Johnson (Fred Williams) lives in bliss with his beautiful wife (Soledad Miranda) until his unorthodox experiments with human embryos causes a medical committee to reject his findings and orders him to discontinue his work. The unstable doctor slashes his wrists in the bathroom. Devastated, his wife vows to seduce and kill the woman and three men “responsible” for the suicide…

Reviews:

Jess Franco’s direction here focuses almost solely on the undoubted screen presence of Soledad Miranda is all the better for it. The revenge and necrophilia-themed lost soulmate storyline, which borrows elements from the director’s previous films The Diabolical Dr. Z  and Venus in Furs, was clearly cobbled together solely to use her obvious acting talents.

714Twm1LSML._SL1500_

Yet, despite little dialogue, Miranda conveys vengeance and female fury with merely her eyes. Elsewhere, the director’s own masochistic demise, at the hands of his lead actress is, as Stephen Thrower suggests in an interview extra, perhaps the sole reason for the film’s existence!

71QKAyOxYDL._SL1500_

Thankfully, its only right at the end of the slim Sadean plot that Franco overreaches himself with a montage of seemingly endless images of Miranda that slightly smacks of overkill.

81ujdf4vIhL._SL1500_

Elsewhere, the lack of a dynamic narrative is compensated for by some delightfully kitsch architecture, interior decoration and fashions such as an ornate metal bra, and fetishistic imagery such as when Ewa Strömberg’s naked character is smothered to death with a plastic see-thru pillow after a lesbian romp with Miranda.

81Dqri9Zx3L._SL1500_

Hubler and Schwab’s upbeat sitar-tinged easy listening score is sometimes out of kilter with what’s happening on screen, e.g. Fred Williams character Dr. Johnson committing suicide, so was presumably used as it was available rather than being composed for this film and Vampyros Lesbos. But that’s a minor quibble as it’s excellent in itself and provides a memorable musical juxtaposition that fits the odd ambiance.

If you’re already a fan of Jess Franco’s delirious late 60s/early 70s oeuvre, the uncut and gorgeous looking Severin Blu-ray restoration is a must-have purchase.

Adrian J Smith, Horrorpedia

81Z-vYHAKzL._SL1500_

“Actress Soledad Miranda’s physical presence alone brings an atmosphere of mysterious eroticism and melancholy to the film that is seldom to be seen in Franco’s other work… a straight “star vehicle” built around Miranda.” Peter Blumenstock, Obsession: The Films of Jess Franco

“For a film filled with nudity, strange decor and kitschy muzak Sie tötete in Ekstase is a downbeat, depressing affair. Even the presence of the lovely Soledad Miranda fails to revive the tortured, repetitive plot. The film overflows with death and thwarted desire… Sie tötete in Ekstase is deadly serious. Too serious to be entertaining.” Pete Tombs, Cathal Tohill, Immoral Tales: European Sex & Horror Movies, 1956-1984

71NWV4cGUeL._SL1500_

“Manuel Merino’s photography focuses solely and seductively upon Miranda, as she seduces the film’s characters. Franco’s compositions are a little too clean for my tastes and too formal, as if he doesn’t want to taint the beauty of Miranda. Numerous close-ups of her face and hypnotic eyes fill She Killed in Ecstasy, as Miranda is often able to portray her descent into madness and despair through only the windows into her soul.” Hans A., Quiet Cool

Plot:

Elaine, a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, and then picks up men and seduces them. However her spells work too well, and she ends up with a string of hapless victims. When she finally meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved will drive her to the brink of insanity and murder…

Reviews:

“ … an expert recreation of ’60s/’70s exploitation fare seen in grindhouses of the time. I sat mesmerised throughout because of the tone, look and askance view on the empowerment subject matter. It’s almost like a Russ Meyer directed version of Blood Orgy of the She-Devils written by Joe Sarno. I felt like eating the Technicolor visuals with a spoon and when the first Ennio Morricone cue began, well, I was in heaven.” Alan Jones, Frightfest

Elaine_broom

“Along the way, the sheer beauty and level of attention to detail in The Love Witch is stunning, and Robinson’s performance shows an astonishing commitment to the physicality of the role, which requires great restraint and poise (utilising her background in dancing). The Love Witch was a particular highlight of IFFR 2016 – a gloriously seductive feminist work, and a distinctly pleasurable viewing experience…” Harriet Warman, Cinematic Investigations

The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave is a 1971 Italian giallo horror thriller film directed by Emilio P. The film’s easy listening score is by Bruno Nicolai. The original Italian title is La notte che Evelyn uscì dalla tomba.

Main cast:

Anthony Steffen (The Crimes of the Black Cat; Tropic of Cancer; Evil Eye), Marina Malfatti (Seven Bloodstained Orchids; All the Colors of the Dark), Erika Blanc (Devil’s Nightmare; Mark of the Devil, Part II), Giacomo Rossi-Stuart (Kill Baby, Kill; Reflections in Black).

Plot:

England: Alan (Anthony Steffen) is a wealthy aristocrat who has just been released from a mental institution following the death of his wife, redheaded Evelyn. Having caught Evelyn making out with an unknown man prior to his institutionalisation, the psychotic Alan begins luring redheaded strippers and prostitutes to his home to torture and kill them, as a means to deal with his grief and inability to get revenge on his deceased wife.

Alan attends a séance in which the medium contacts Evelyn, causing Alan to faint. Alan’s cousin (and only living heir) Farley offers to move into the mansion to take care of him. Farley takes him to a strip club and Alan takes home Susan (Erika Blanc), one of the strippers at the club who disappears after barely escaping with her life. Afterwards, Farley believes that Alan would be cured of his instability if he replaces Evelyn with a new bride that resembles her. On Farley’s advice, Alan moves to London to get away from his home and marries Gladys (Marina Malfatti), another redhead.

Gladys finds herself being haunted by strange goings on at her new home and being shunned by Evelyn’s brother and Alan’s invalid aunt, whom Alan has taken in as staff at his mansion. Gladys tells Alan her suspicions that Evelyn faked her death to escape Alan and run away with her lover. Alan’s mental state continues to unravel as Evelyn’s brother and Alan’s aunt are each killed by a mystery killer and when he sees a zombified Evelyn beckoning to him from her tomb, he breaks down completely…

Reviews:

“Miraglia makes fantastic use of his castle setting, managing a number of moments that are undeniably creepy. It never goes as far as I would’ve liked in terms of scares, but there’s one show stopping sequence set inside of a crypt that seriously crawled under my skin and stayed there – something that scarcely happens to me these days. Miraglia’s sweeping camera, surreal imagery and textured lighting helps to cover up some pretty comical lapses in narrative sense.” Matt Serafini, Dread Central

the-night-evelyn-came-out-of-the-grave

“There’s lots to enjoy here, including Aunt Agatha and her wheelchair hiding in a wardrobe to spy on people. Plus the hilariously tone deaf pop-combo at the outdoor party. Then there’s Malfatti’s miraculously tiny wardrobe, which shows as much cleavage as humanely possibly without letting her nipples burst free. Bruno Nicolai’s score is typically lush and the film boasts some great cinematography – plus some seriously gorgeous 1970s furniture…” J. Kerswell, Hysteria Lives

vlcsnap-2011-01-12-01h00m52s66

“From the lurid S&M sessions and stripteases in the basement to an out-of-nowhere corpse devouring by foxes, Evelyn pulls out all the stops to please its audience without tipping its hand about the characters’ true intentions until the climax. And what a climax it is; suddenly switching the film’s setting to a chilly, icy-white interior out of a Kubrick film, the last showdown is an unforgettably unhinged concoction with poisonings, stabbings, blood-smearing cleavage, and a handy bag of sulphuric acid creating a true Grand Guignol finish.” Mondo Digital

Night-Evelyn-1971

“It’s no easier to follow on the screen, believe me, but it’s all so demented that it becomes compelling in spite of itself. On the other hand, it should be borne in mind that my tolerance for goofball Italianate filmmaking has been raised to great heights by years of intensive exposure.” Scott Ashlin, 1000 Misspent Hours and Counting

Plot:

But the fiery lovers who attended Lisa begin to die one by one in increasingly cruel ways, and the woman finds herself involved in the chain of murders…

Reviews:

“The murders are beautifully staged and photographed, and are properly nasty and horrible. The performances are all just the right side of odd, and the ending is so deliciously and deliriously bonkers that it will make giallo fans want to watch it all over again.” John Llewellyn Probert, This is Horror

Tulpa Lisa

“The essence and religion of Tulpa (the subject itself) is explored quite well bringing some unique visuals additions to the trippy tone and direction of the film. Actress Claudia Gerini is quite stunning to watch granting us a few revealing moments in between. She provides quite a performance which contributing much to the main charter of the film.” HorrorNews.net

“For all it’s weaknesses (and there are plenty of those), Tulpa is an interesting ride, which has some gruesome murder scenes, a camp horror vibe, which is fun and non-threatening and plenty of hyperbolic twists and turns along the way, which really (in an ideal world) will keep you on the edge of your seat.” Front Row Reviews

“The cast are required to look impressive in designer clothes and gruesome prosthetics rather than give nuanced performances, but the cadaverous Nuot Arquint – who played the spirit of death in Shadow – has a real presence as the proprietor of the ludicrous, yet surprisingly sweet sex club.” Kim Newman, Screen Daily

“This is a basically a very accurate adult version of the 1992 Francis Ford Coppola film Bram Stoker’s Dracula. As weird as it may sound though, the rated R film was a bit more sexual than this version.” Vampire Beauties

” … sticks pretty close to the source material (from what I can tell). And although the end scene unravels some in terms of narrative and timing, Dracula XXX is a serious, sexy flick that I think anyone even marginally into this subculture will enjoy. “Relatively straightforward horror plot? Check. Plenty of nudity (“the cheapest special effect”)? Check. Long stretches of hot women sensually washing/exploring their bodies? Check. Absolutely minimal production design hidden behind lots of shot-reverse-shot close-ups? Check. Bit of blood and violence right at the end? Check.”MJ Simpson

“This movie is amateurish, badly written and incoherent. The female lead and the psychic investigator are so poor at acting that they wouldn’t even get a part in a school play. The so-called special effects are pathetic. It has only two good things going for it. One is the lighting, which is subtle and pleasing to look at. The other is Jonathan Hansler’s performance as the sleazy landlord.” Morgan Scorpion, Amazon.co.uk

Reviews:

“Oy ve. Where shall I even begin describing this exercise in cheap gore, cheap T&A contributed by ladies who certainly look their parts and camcorder production values? Let’s just say I had more fun making the screen caps than I did actually watching the movie.” The Bloody Pit of Horror

“Good and bad are sticky concepts when you’re down at the bottom of the cinematic heap, as we are here. What it is, is a bloke with no money and a bit of a sense of humour just making something happen.” Mark Longden, International Syndicate of Cult Film Critics

cannibalhookers10

“Farmer does Demon Queen again, but less dreamy, less weird, more broad and dumb and “market-friendly,” complete with desperately tasteless jokes and a hip soundtrack full of watery quasi-punk rock. Maybe a skosh better than the similar Night of the Living Babes (if only because Farmer does seem to want to take the horror elements seriously when they belatedly show up) but still wholly dismal and depressing.” Steve Carlson, Letterboxd.com

“The sound is terrible, one girl keeps looking at the camera, and the FX consist of blood and boobs.” Michael J. Weldon, The Psychotronic Video Guide

“The acting is atrocious, the premise is idiotic, the blood and gore effects are a joke, and the entire thing looks like it was filmed with someone’s uncle’s video camera that was ordinarily used to shoot home movies. It looks a lot like a really bad 80’s porno flick instead of a horror film and it is just painfully bad in general.” Todd Martin, HorrorNews.net

Terror-at-Orgy-Castle-1971

Terror at Orgy Castle is a 1971 American erotic horror film written and directed by Zoltan G. Spencer (The Satanist; The Hand of Pleasure) who also narrates. The film was shot silently on the same sets as Gallery of Horror (1967) and Blood of Dracula’s Castle (1969). It stars Bambi Allen (Satan’s Sadists).

Terror at Orgy Castle (1971).1

Plot:

Bill and Lisa, a young American couple on a European vacation, stay at a castle in Germany where they encounter Countess Dominova, her hunchbacked servant and are drawn into a black mass…

Terror at Orgy Castle (1971).3

Reviews:

‘More sex than violence here, really just an old soft core with horror undertones. Best line of the film; three naked women are present in the room when the dude narrating says, “They don’t seem to worry about drafts here in this clammy hall.” Horrorthon

‘ …50 minutes of monkey scratchin’ crammed into a 63-minute saga about adventurous lovers. Our unseen narrator promises us a lot of interesting things. He swears we will witness a black mass and some manner of hideous human sacrifice …The closest we get to any real repulsion—aside from all the noxious nudity—is the infamous “rat casserole” scene, where a live mouse is plastered against a woman’s exposed stomach. The implication is that the rodent intends to “chew” its way out. Turns out it was all a hoax, just like the movie it resides in.’ Bill Gibron, DVD Verdict

‘As a ‘movie about girls’ Terror at Orgy Castle works, there are plenty to look at crammed into its 63 minutes. The narration provides some funny lines too, and the soundtrack is simultaneously horror-ific and groovy.’ Alex Eruptor, Movies About GirlsFiery-Films-Terror-at-Orgy-Castle-1972

‘Although only a softcore movie, the nudity here is pretty explicit as both male and female genitals are put under close scrutiny from every angle by the probing camera. Basically, if it’s dangling enough and hairy enough it’s on the screen in it’s all it’s glory! God Bless the 70’s.’ Beardy Freak Reviews

The Slaughter of the Vampires – promoted as Slaughter of the Vampires – is a 1962 Italian horror film written and directed by Roberto Mauri (Night of Violence; Kong Island). The original title is La strage dei vampiri (“The Massacre of Vampires”).

A 1966 British release by E.J. Fancey was cut for an ‘X’ certificate by the BBFC but their website contains no details of the censored material.

In the United States, the film was also re-titled Curse of the Blood Ghouls in 1969 and issued on a double-bill with Bloodsuckers

slaughter-of-the-vampires-5

The film was a low budget production, so much so that actor Dieter Eppler (also in Castle of the Walking Dead) stated that many cast members were not paid for their work.

Cast:

In 19th Century Germany, a newly-wed couple Marquis Wolfgang (Walter Bigari) and Louise (Graziella Granata) acquire a castle. To commemorate the occasion, Louise performs a piano piece she has written during a party. Louise then feels a strange sensation and retires to her room.

slaughter-of-the-vampires-4

She is visited by a vampire (Dieter Eppler) who she originally sees at the party she was in and sucks her blood, leading her to desire him.

slaughter-of-the-vampires-3

As a result, Louise’s health declines which leads to Wolfgang seeking aid from Dr. Nietzche (Luigi Batzella). Wolfgang is too late as when the doctor arrives Louise is already dead. As the doctor diagnoses this, Wolfgang is shocked to find Louise alive as she approaches him and sucks his blood.

slaughter-of-the-vampires-1

The doctor later seeks out Louise’s hiding place and stakes her to death, along with the servant Corrine, who is also a vampire. Wolfgang’s hiding spot is not found as the doctor seeks another abode in the castle. Wolfgang, who is not entirely converted into a vampire, corners his adversary and stakes him with spikes of an iron grating…

Reviews:

” … an engaging gothic tale from the golden age of Italian horror. Filled with romantic melodrama, exceptional period costumes and exquisite locations, the film is less silly than the previous vampire films Brandi starred in, and quite frankly, more entertaining.” George R. Reis, DVD Drive-In

slaughter-of-the-vampires-07

” …Mauri’s direction is tautly edited, with an impressive number of inventive set-ups and roving camera shots of good locations, and at just 79 minutes interest never flags. The film may be the first to offer a vampire bride whose ample, heaving bosom almost becomes a character in itself (themselves?). Granata’s low-cut dresses pre-date what became the standard at Hammer by a half-dozen years.” Stuart Galbraith IV, DVD Talk

“Some good moments can be found in this otherwise lackluster film, including a highly atmospheric early bit in which the vampire spies on Louise through bushes outside her house, and a later scene in which Louise stalks Wolfgang through a courtyard at night. Graziella Granata is quite alluring as the vampirized Louise, and makes for an extremely compelling sight.” Fright.com

“Eppler’s vampiric assaults on Granata provide a few mildly erotic moments […] Ugo Brunelli’s camera makes the most of the atmospheric sets and enhances the sense of foreboding present within a few eerie clusters of trees. Aldo Piga’s heavy-handed score seems more appropriate for a tearjerker than for a vampire flick.” Lawrence McCallum, Italian Horror Films of the 1960s

nightwish-1988-brian-thompson

Reviews:

” …features absurd dialogue, hot chicks, and an entertaining albeit non-linear plot. I’d say give a watch for Thompson and Kaitan alone. Nightwish features roadkill, alien cocoons, a dude that pisses his pants, zombies, a retarded gate keeper, severed fingers, and tarantulas.” 80s Horror Central

nightwish-1988-dream-horror

” …while there is so much going on here, I was never distracted from a completely predictable climax that I knew was coming since the first two scenes of the film. With a couple of scary gore effects and Brian Thompson, Cook’s film is not a complete failure. Trimming some of the fat would have made a leaner, meaner Nightwish.” Charles Tatum

nightwish-11

It’s like the director came up with various ideas and then dropped them. To make up for it, there’s some decent special effects involving alien breeding scenarios, nudity (Elizabeth Kaitan and Alisha Das), Alisha Das having sex with a ghost, and some interesting visuals bringing to mind some Stephen Sayadian weirdness mixed with something you might see in Night Train to Terror.” Bill Gordon, Horror Fan Zine

Review:

Something is amiss in the local convent, the mummified Mother Superior raves in the cellar, an evil-looking gardener (Franco Garofalo) lurks in the grounds, babies are boiled in the font, incidences of mutilation rise amongst the novices and the threat of demonic possession looms large.

As an ill-fated clerical investigation tries to sort it all out, the possibility of a return to the oldest of gothic subgenres, the evil convent story (pace Anne Radcliffe, M.G. Lewis and Diderot) seems in the offing, especially since director Bruno Mattei also made The True Story of the Nun of Monza (one assumes, using recycled nun habits and convents sets).

As flaky special effects and softcore writhings are trotted out, it becomes obvious that this is another ‘exorcismsploitationer’ with a superficial emphasis on Catholic trappings.

Most of the minor characters meets supernatural fates until a few slices of exposition finally reveal that it’s all down to the influence of a nun’s illegitimate daughter and the Devil himself, who have a right old set-to, dragging in some zombie nuns, in lieu of a climax.

Kim Newman, Horrorpedia

Other reviews:

“In The Other Hell, they manage to rip off Carrie, The Exorcist, The Devils and The Omen (among others), while the music is stolen from various Goblin-scored films, including Buio Omega. And don’t miss the Mario Bava riff — the scenes in the convent attic, which almost succeed in being atmospheric and disturbing. That is, until you ask yourself: “What is a room full of dolls hanging from chains doing in a convent?” Braineater

“Alternately odd and hilarious, this mixed bag – full of screaming, out of control nuns […] An outrageous performance by Stoppi as the guarded Mother Superior dominates the action. The whole would-be transgressive silliness must be seen to be believed.” The Terror Trap

” …manages all sorts of confusing antics sure to keep the viewer in a state of increasing disbelief. Telekinesis, dog attacks, cooked babies, genital slicing and sketching priests might all add up to a cringe-inducing cocktail of crudeness to most, but thankfully for us viewers, it’s just another day at the office for Bruno Mattei!” MonsterHunter

” …while the film starts off promising, things slow way the f*ck down once the priest comes on the scene to investigate the murders. Along the way, there’s some bizarre moments (like a dog attack and some baby boiling); yet it’s nothing that’s in the same league as the opening scene. Ultimately, the intermittent spurts of WTF craziness just don’t justify the long dull stretches in between.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

” …The Other Hell does not disappoint with the old ultraviolence, be it death by stigmata, multiple stabbings, a very convincing priest immolation, or a severed head in an altar.” Duane Hicks, UK Horror Scene

The Handmaiden – aka 아가씨- is a 2016 South Korean erotic psychological thriller film directed by Park Chan-wook (Stoker; Thirst; Oldboy). It is inspired by the novel Fingersmith by Welsh writer Sarah Waters, with the setting changed from Victorian era Britain to Korea under Japanese colonial rule. It stars Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri, Ha Jung-woo and Cho Jin-woong.

The film was released to critical acclaim and has grossed over $37 million worldwide. In the United Kingdom, the film grossed more than $1.34 million theatrically, becoming the highest-grossing foreign language film in the last five years (not including Hindi films).

A woman is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her…

Reviews:

The surprising thing about it is that it delivers on every promise that categorization makes: there is mystery, hidden agendas, tension, explosions of violence, sex scenes, and a few daring escapes. While visually stunning, the film never moves to far from what lies at its core: an exploration of desire, imprisonment, vulnerability, and dishonesty in the name of self-interest and love.” Gabino Iglesias, Horror Talk

“Park, with his graphic tendencies, remains fixated on role play, both in terms of sex and deception. All four main characters are pursuing a vision of freedom that can be claimed only through a lie.” Jia Tolentino, The New Yorker

“Underground literary sex clubs, torture chambers, explicit verbal descriptions of the female anatomy – did I mention there’s a robbery somewhere in this scintillating lesbionic fantasy? A long-winded, repetitive, yet astonishingly beautiful fantasy that’s light on suspense, and heavy on “wait, where are those silver bells going?” Matt Donato, We Got This Covered

“Eschewing his usual modus operandi (larding an aura of sickening dread with virtuosic camerawork) for the rollicking tension of active kink, Park finds a percolating balance between sensuality and sin, and it might just win him admirers beyond the usual bloodthirsty fanboys.” Robert Abele, The Wrap

The Handmaiden is assured filmmaking, even handling later “Rashomon”-style messiness with grace. The picture keeps shifting perspective, revealing layers of disease and danger, eventually leading to graphic violence in the final act, keeping in step with Park’s cinematic interests.” Brian Orndorf, Blu-ray.com

“The eroticism of The Handmaiden is important – perhaps the most important part of the film. The action takes place in a wilderness of mirrors, a theatre of deception and masks – a world in which sex is the one thing that is always sincere, always real. It is not a style accessory, but rather the linchpin. It is what creates a co-conspiracy of freedom.” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

” …the director of such extreme revenge thrillers as Sympathy for Lady Vengeance and Oldboy slides back into his own febrile cinematic universe of eroticized torture and misogyny, rather submerging Waters’ theme of female rebellion and liberation.” Maggie Lee, Variety

“The film’s stellar combination of dark comedy, drama, and romance has resulted in one of the most memorable movies of the year. The Handmaiden is reminiscent of classic Park Chan-wook in the way that it commands our attention; it’s spellbindingly beautiful. Highly recommended!” Jeff Nelson, DVD Talk

‘She’ll suck more than your blood!’

Sexcula is a 1974 Canadian adult science fiction horror film that was previously considered to be ‘lost’. Shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, by Bob Hollowich it was screened once before disappearing and has been sought after by cult sinema aficionados for decades. It stars Debbie Collins, Jamie Orlando and John Alexander.

A young woman inherits a mansion and discovers an old diary that details the exploits of Dr. Fellatingstein (Jamie Orlando), who has created a man named Frank (John Alexander) to satisfy her insatiable desires Unfortunately, Frank doesn’t seem up to the task. Frustrated, she summons a relative, Countess Sexula (Debbie Collins), to assist her in arousing Frank to perform. A gorilla and a female pleasure-robot are also involved…

Following a print being discovered in the Canadian Film Archives, Impulse Pictures, an imprint of Synapse Films, released this hardly seen movie on DVD on April 9 2013.

Reviews:

“… fairly horrible but no less enjoyable and everyone in front of the camera seems to be in on the joke. Even if the performances are goofy and wooden, the cinematography fairly primitive and the whole thing completely ludicrous, this makes for a fun watch.” Ian Jane, Rock! Shock! Pop!

“On most levels, Sexcula is poorly made. The director and cinematographer have little clue about staging scenes in any interesting way. The film is indifferent to the period setting – with telephones and modern lights turning up in the supposed 1869 era. This does lead to the occasional breaking of the fourth wall…” Richard Scheib, Moria

” …it’s a brew so completely out of its mind you won’t believe it exists even after watching it. A mad female scientist, a lady robot, a lust-crazed bisexual ape, random inserts, nonsensical plotting, and terrible, terrible acting. In short, it’s pretty glorious.” Nathaniel Thompson, Mondo Digital

“The film’s visuals are actually very good, especially the more sexually charged moments. Pacing is never an issue as things move along nicely from one sexual rendezvous to the next. And even the in between moments that give the viewer more character backstory are all very entertaining and at times extremely amusing.” Chris Wood, 10k Bullets

“With its gorilla suits, crackling electronic equipment and references to classic Universal monsters, Sexcula manages to be almost as out-of-time as the Countess’ bedside telephone—a genre-mixing curiosity piece that is still fun but, like other Canadian films of its ilk, a little sexually self-conscious in the way it keeps insisting on its own artifice.” Canuxploitation!

Main cast:

  • Debbie Collins in dual roles as Countess Sexcula and an aroused bride
  • Jamie Orlando as Fellatingstein
  • John Alexander
  • Tim Lowery
  • Bud Coal
  • Marie McLeod
  • David F. Hurry
  • Julia Simons
  • Franklin Parker
  • Clarence Frog
